What is freediving ?

Freediving, also known as apnea, is a type of underwater diving where the diver relies on holding their breath until they resurface. It has a rich history dating back to Ancient Greece, where it was used for activities such as collecting seafood and salvaging goods from shipwrecks.

Why freedive ?

  • Freedom and simplicity: Freediving requires minimal equipment and preparation time compared to scuba diving.
  • Eco-friendly: It is a low-impact sport that doesn't disturb marine life with noisy equipment.
  • No decompression time: Unlike scuba diving, freedivers don't need to worry about decompression stops for deep dives.
  • Mammalian Diving Reflex: Humans can tap into this natural reflex, similar to whales and dolphins, which can help with underwater adaptation.
  • Mental and therapeutic benefits: Freediving's focus on breathing, heart rate, and reflex control is similar to yoga and can offer mental and therapeutic advantages.

WHY MAURITIUS ?

Mauritius is a tropical island in the south west Indian Ocean, surrounded by one of the longest coral reefs in the world and with an abundance of marine life including dolphins and whales.

Mark Twain said “Mauritius was made first, and then Heaven; and Heaven was copied after Mauritius”.

GOOD TO KNOW

This is one of the most common misconceptions about freediving. With proper training, you will learn breath-hold techniques that will likely result in you being pleasantly surprised by how long you can hold your breath.
While you don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer to take the course, it is important that you feel confident in the water. To become a PADI Freediver you will need to be able to swim 200 metres/yards. This swim will be untimed and can be completed using any stroke, so you can take your time.
Freediving only requires a few items: a mask, snorkel, fins, weight belt (sometimes) and a wetsuit (depending on your location).
